NEW YORK STATE OUTDOORSMEN HALL OF FAME

Newsletter - Spring 2008

We hope that everyone is planning on attending our annual banquet on April 26.  In addition to inducting the class of 2008 and presenting some special annual awards, we will be marking our 25th Anniversary. We will have some items on our agenda to mark the anniversary of this special occasion, including honoring former inductees.

Banquet:  Saturday, April 26, 2008.  Registration & social hour 5 pm.  Dinner 6 pm.  The Rusty Rail Banquet House, Route 5, Canastota, NY.  Cost - $20 pp includes appetizers, deluxe buffet, and dessert.  Reservations due by April 18.  Call Leslie VanNort at work (235-7680) or Leo Maloney (363-3896) or e-mail  lmalone1@twcny.rr.com.

This year’s inductees are another outstanding group from all corners of the state.  They are:  Bill Wellman, Dr. John Braico, Ray Elliott, Rudy Hektor, Bud Woodfield, Ron Kolodziej, Chuck Godfrey, and Mike Zagata.  Posthumous inductees are Scott Sampson, Don Bronson, and Tim Noga.

Many of you received raffle tickets for our annual fund-raiser in the mail earlier this year.  Others have obtained them at our monthly meetings.  If you have not received any, please contact Scott Faulkner, chairman, at 829-3588.  Tickets are $10 each with lots of cash prizes.  Drawings will be held at the May 15 meeting.  Return money and stubs before this date to PO Box 4118, Utica, NY 13504 or to Leo Maloney, 321 Robertson Road, Sherrill, NY 13461.  Please help support our main fund-raiser for the year.

New York State Outdoor Writers Association seeks to honor an individual or organization that has created public awareness of outdoor issues or recreational opportunities in New York State. The NYSOWA M. Paul Keesler NYOutdoor Citizen Award will be presented at the annual conference this fall.

The award was created to honor worthy individuals and organizations, at the same time perpetuating the name of Paul Keesler.  Certainly the people who have been honored by being inducted into the NYSOHOF are the type of people that fit the criteria of this award.  In 2007, William (Bill) Lloyd of Newport, N.Y., received the inaugural award.

Anyone may submit a nomination of 350 words or less and have it endorsed by an active member of NYSOWA.  To review award criterion and the nominating process, visit www.nysowa.org.  For more information or to submit a nomination contact Glenn Sapir, gsapir@earthlink.net or (845) 528-0968.  Nominations are due by July 1, 2008

Dues are due.  Thanks to everyone who has paid their NYSOHOF Association dues so far.  These are necessary to help us continue our functions as well as our regular expenses.  Dues are $20 or $15 for inductees.

As usual we are involved with youth fishing activities.  The annual Kids Fishing Derby in New Hartford has been arranged by Jack Hasse for Saturday, June 7.  Contact Gary Bullis if you can help with this event.  The Future Anglers Outreach will be held April 26, 8 – 12:30 at Beach Road on Oneida Lake.  This will involve personal instruction for both kids and parents, providing tackle, and experience in fishing.  Contact Capt. Ted Dobs (264-6624) if you can help.

Our new web site is looking very good and contains useful information, thanks to the efforts of Bob Fields and Bill Lloyd.  We will continue to make improvements and add features.  Check it out at www.nysohof.org.

As indicated previously, we hope to have a special day in Sept. for our monthly meeting and continue our celebration of the 25th Anniversary.  It would feature a barbeque, displays by vendors and organizations, and demonstrations, etc.  However we need to know if enough people are able and interested in attending to make this worthwhile.  Please fill out the slip below and return it to Leo Maloney or contact by e-mail and let us know by May 1, 2008.
