News Updates

By-laws:  The By-laws Committee has recommended several changes to reflect the growth of membership and the reality of becoming truly a statewide organization.  Since it is inconvenient for members from various parts of the state to attend meetings in central New York, and the fact that our Board of Directors includes members from various parts of the state, the number of meetings will be reduced.  There will be regular meetings of the Board of Directors but many of the decisions of the organization will be made quickly and conveniently by electronic media (e-mail, etc.).  The election of officers will also be changed to October although the terms will commence in January as they are now.  This will avoid some of the nasty weather and lake effect snow storms which we often get in December.

Please view the By-laws and proposed changes posted here on the web site.  The new language is in red.  Language to be deleted is underlined.  If you have questions please contact Scott Faulkner or Leo Maloney.  We hope that you will attend the meetings in October and November when these proposals will be voted on.

Nominations for new inductees:  Once again it is time to start the process of nominating worthy individuals for induction to the NYSOHOF.  The downloadable form is included here on the web site.  Remember that successful nominations include substantial information on the efforts of the individual to preserve outdoor sports and conservation.  It is also important to have additional letters of support since the Board is varied in composition and geographic areas and we need these to judge the merits of each nominee.

For this year please send nominations to Leo Maloney, 321 Robertson Road, Sherrill, NY 13461 or by attachments to e-mail:  lmalone1@twcny.rr.com.  This will make things faster and easier than using our PO Box this winter.  Note that the deadline for nominations is January 30, 2012.

NYS OUTDOORSMEN HALL OF FAME

Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame To Induct Eight.

The New York State Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame proudly announces that it will induct eight new members at the Annual Banquet, April 30, 2011 in Canastota, NY.  The eight individuals represent a cross section of interests and achievements from various regions of New York State.  What they do have in common is a lifetime of dedication to conservation and improving participation in outdoor sports.

Will Elliott is an outdoor writer from western New York known for championing conservation, hunting and fishing issues and has served the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen in many roles as well as being on the Fisheries Advisory Board. Robert Fields of Oneida County has been a member of Trout Unlimited and has dramatically increased the number of participants and the success of the Trout In the Classroom program.

Fred Golofaro has helped secure access, increase fishing opportunities, and conservation on Long Island, and is responsible for the highly successful Send-a-Kid Fishing Program. Lin Menninger is an educator known for involving youngsters in outdoor activities, being a volunteer instructor for many different programs in Onondaga County and has been named one of “Field & Stream’s” Heroes of Conservation.

Harold Palmer of Otsego County has been active in various sportsmen’s organizations, including the New York State Conservation Council where he helped secure passage of the Youth Hunting and Trapper Mentor Bills. Ed Pugliese has been active as a volunteer coach and instructor for many organizations in Onondaga County and coordinates its highly successful pheasant program.

Derwood Say, an instructor, educator, and sportsman has been active in many organizations in Allegany County and southwestern NY, as well as co-founder of Conservation Alliance of NY. Ed Van Put of Sullivan County is well known for publicizing the Catskill fishery and is credited with securing public fishing rights, and protecting the fishery there in many ways.

These sportsmen will be honored at the Annual Banquet on April 30, 2011.  Guests and interested sportsmen are encouraged to attend.  Information or reservations are available by calling 315-363-3896 by April 23.

The NYS Outdoorsmen also periodically honors groups or individuals who have made important contributions to our outdoors heritage with special awards. This year the NYSOHOF will present its Outdoorsmen of the Year to the Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Club for their untiring efforts and success in restoring Atlantic Salmon to several central New York waters.

News Update

December 20, 2010

Since we are truly a statewide organization with members in all areas of the state it is not practical for most members to attend our regular meetings.  We will attempt to keep you informed of developments and news with our quarterly newsletter, e-mail bulletins, and news postings on the website.

Thanks to the generosity of many members of the NYSOHOF and several sportsmens’ organizations the Hall of Fame was able to meet the unexpected expense of our forced move from Gander Mountain last summer.  The packing, moving, etc. cost us $1400.  Our special appeal raised $2200.  Please note the list of donors who came to our aid.  At our September meeting it was decided that the balance of $800 would be put aside in a special savings to be used only for enhancement of the new museum in Vails Mills.

Remember that we are incorporated as a 501-c and the Association is empowered to conduct all business on behalf of the Hall of Fame.  Our policy is that any dues paying member or life member who cannot attend the meeting will be provided minutes of the meeting or a treasurer’s report upon request.

Currently we are in decent financial condition.  Throughout the year our main expenses are insurance, the plaques and other expenses connected with the annual induction banquet, memberships in groups such as NYSCC, and newsletter expenses.  Our main sources of revenue are the dues of the Association and our annual raffle.  As customary we will be sending a dues reminder to everyone sometime in early January along with the newsletter.  Again this year we will be holding a raffle of eight nice items with winners to be drawn in June.

Remember that the nominations for induction to the Hall of Fame are due January 30.  The nomination form may be downloaded from the web site or by calling Leo Maloney at (315) 363-3896.  Selection of inductees will be early in February.  Our annual induction banquet will be at the Rusty Rail in Canastota on April 30, 2011.

We have a new Post Office address.  It is PO Box 605, Poland, NY 13431.

Our regular meetings will now be held in the Whitestown Vets Club, 174 Whitesboro St., Yorkville, NY.  Please use the lower entrance from the rear parking lot.  Next meeting will be January 20, 2011.

Once again we will be sponsoring the Adirondack Fishing Expo in Old Forge on May 20-21, 2011.  Details in the next newsletter.

NEW HOME FOR NYSOHOF MUSEUM

Following the forced move from Gander Mountain on short notice in the summer of 2010, the NYS Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame had to hire a professional mover to remove, pack, and store or move the contents of our museum, including all the inductees plaques, special awards, mounts, and educational items.  We accepted the generous offer of Bob Kazmierski at Wildlife Sports Educational Museum (WSEM) to store our materials at no charge.  Subsequently a site committee and the Board of Directors met with WSEM and accepted their offer to develop a separate museum at their world class display.

Immediately after the holidays a crew of members will partition and remodel a portion of the large gift shop area and arrange our plaques of inductees and other displays.  We will be using our mounts and other material to form educational displays which illustrate the philosophy of the NYSOHOF and its activities.  Included in our plans will be inter-active displays which explain the accomplishments of many of our inductees.

The WSEM is located at the busy intersection of Routes 29 and 30A, i.e. the roads to Saratoga or Great Sacandaga Lake.  Thus it will be easily accessible to travelers and tourists.  With increased access and publicity we expect to have many more visitors.  Our new signage and the attraction of WSEM should further publicize and honor our inductees and their accomplishments.

December 3, 2010

Hi Everyone,

This is a quick memo to update you on some important items.  I apologize if you receive this message more than once.  I am having some computer problems.

1. December Meeting of OHOF:  WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15.

Location:  Whitestown Vets Club, 174 Whitesboro St., Yorkville, NY 13495.  Normally we meet on Thursday, but due to conflicts at the Vets Club we are holding our December meeting on Wednesday instead.

2. We have been looking for a permanent place to hold our meetings since we were kicked out of Gander Mountain.  We have been fortunate to have had several offers this fall but we have been looking for a centrally located, convenient location.  We will now hold our meetings at the Whitestown Vets Club, 174 Whitesboro St., Yorkville.  For those who are not familiar with the area or need directions please call Leo Maloney (363-3896).  Driveway is on the left, please park down in back and the door at that lower level will enter into our meeting room.  We will have our January Meeting on the normal third Thursday, i.e. January 20.  Our newsletter and website will remind you of future dates.

3. NEW Post Office address:  NYSOHOF, PO Box 605, Poland, NY 13431.

Please make note of this and send all general matters to this address.

4. Reminder that Nominations for 2011 Inductees are due January 30.  The nomination form can be downloaded from the web site or contact Leo Maloney (363-3896) or lmalone1@twcny.rr.com

5. We realize that for those outside of central NY attending the meetings can be difficult.  We have had some problems with out web site earlier this year but now they have been corrected thanks to Bob Fields.  We will post highlights of the meetings, updates on the new Museum, and other news there, in addition to our newsletter and e-mail bulletins.

Thanks for everything and enjoy the holiday season.
